The inshore and backwater fishing has slowed a little due to the inconsistent weather patterns we have experienced lately. The up and down temps have kept the water cooler and prevented some of our inshore species from moving in. This should change as soon as spring has fully sprung and the fish get more active in the warmer water temps. Flounder, sheephead, small and large bluefish will be showing along with the trout, redfish, and black drum we have caught all winter. This will provide us with a lot of action and a good variety of inshore fish to pursue in the weeks ahead.

The redfishing has been good on most days and should be getting better as the water warms. May is typically a excellent month for catching reds in the backwaters of the Cape Fear area. There will be large schools roaming the flats and the sightfishing should be good when conditions are right. We have caught some reds sightfishing on the flats recently but most of the redfishing has been done in the creeks. We are catching reds on Gulp baits, DOA soft plastics, live minnows and shrimp. The topwater bite will be picking up and I can’t wait to start catching reds on topwater. Reds will be spread out throughout the Cape Fear area and lots of days will provide us with good numbers of reds and speckled trout along with flounder to produce our Carolina inshore slams.
